⚜️A fresh look at the 1841 Brunei-Brooke Agreement: Unveiling New Interpretation on Its 183rd Anniversary ⚜️Synopsis:This year marks the 183rd anniversary of the Brunei-Brooke Agreement, signed on September 24, 1841. This pivotal agreement marked a significant turning point in Sarawak’s history, heralding the gradual decline of the Sultanate of Brunei, once a great empire. Ironically, Sarawak emerged as the new dominant power in the northern coast of Borneo, the third largest island in the world. By 1890, the Sultanate was reduced to just two small enclaves, separated by the newly established districts of Limbang and Lawas. While the broader history of Sarawak has been extensively researched and documented, the Brunei-Brooke Agreement itself has not received adequate scholarly attention. On this 183rd anniversary, this talk will offer a closer examination and textual analysis of the agreement, aiming to deepen our understanding of this crucial document and illuminate its impact on both the immediate and remote historical context of Sarawak.
